The veteran suicide epidemic is real and the cost is lives is tragic, at least twenty a day; with no end in sight.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been derelict in its duty, and Congress passes one piece of legislation after another which looks good in a press release but does nothing to address the root cause of the problem – the individual VA managers whose neglect and abuse contributed to a veteran suicide.
Until those VA managers are held personally accountable for their apathy or malicious actions the suicide crisis will continue. No one is above the law.
There is a solution.
The MEDIVAC ACT requires the House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees to
- Establish investigative task forces (or similar bodies) of Committee member staffers
- Authorize the task forces to subpoena and interview, under oath, the individual VA employees, and their managers, who were directly involved in the care for each veteran who committed suicide
- Authorize the task forces to subpoena and interview, under oath, the individual VA employees, and their managers, who were directly involved in the care for each veteran who submit a valid criminal complaint
